2D Concept and Environment Artist
The 2D Concept and Environment Artist is a 2D art all-rounder, with a specific focus on the design and illustration of environments.
Role / Responsibilities
- Conceptualise and illustrate detailed 2D environment scenes for use as game backgrounds and scenes.
- Conceptualise and illustrate 2D characters, icons, and other game assets, as required.
- Comfortably use 3D software in your workflow. Be keenly aware of when 3D use will enhance work and productivity, and when it is not required for the task.
- Plan deadlines and meet them consistently.
- Work effectively and efficiently with other artists and/or management to fulfil production needs. Operate as part of a team with shared goals.
- Understand the project’s overall vision, and strive to execute it.
- Respond effectively to feedback. Candidates should see change requests as design challenges.
Required Abilities / Qualifications
- A portfolio and CV showing 3+ years of relevant experience in the games industry, in a similar role. The portfolio must demonstrate work experience and abilities.
- Extensive professional experience with digital illustration in Photoshop, in a detailed, realistic, yet painterly style.
- Extensive professional experience with conceptualisation and illustration for games.
- Secure, professional experience with using Blender (or equivalent 3D software) to block out and prepare scenes for illustration, with a view to efficiency and fast turnaround. Candidates must be able to light a scene, model/download assets, and use basic textures.
- A good, grounded grasp of architectural design, especially the classical architectures present throughout the Ancient Roman Empire and its bordering regions.
- The ability and patience to thoroughly research subject matter, and strive to convey it in a way satisfying and familiar to demanding audiences.
- Secure, generalist experience with designing and illustrating characters and props that help to populate and breathe life into scenes.
- Ability to communicate effectively in written English.
Desired Abilities / Qualifications
- Degrees or diplomas in Digital Concept Art and/or Illustration.
- Work experience with idle animation of 2D environments in Unity and/or Adobe After Effects.
